“I can’t believe we bought this huge ship!” cried Nick with excitement.
“Our first sail should be awesome!” exclaimed Chris.
“California here we come!” shouted Nick.
Nick and Chris were standing on deck talking. They were sailing to California. They kept talking about California and what they were going to do there. It was getting dark and they had to go inside to their room. While they changed their clothes and started getting ready for bed, they were still talking about what they would do in California. After changing, they went to their bed to sleep. Chris jumped into his bed and started snoring in no time. Nick, on the other hand, had a hard time getting himself to sleep so he went outside onto the deck again and looked up at the stars.
“I can’t wait until we get to California,” Nick whispered to himself.
After gazing at the stars and observing the rising and falling waves, he went back inside to his bed and laid down. He started thinking about the beautiful city and gradually went to sleep. But little did they know what was coming their way!
The next day, they woke up to a cloudy and windy day. When Nick opened the door of the compartment room on the ship, a huge gust of wind hit him and he almost flew back. He was confused. He had checked the weather before they had sailed off and it had predicted it was going to be sunny the whole week they were traveling.
“Hey Chris, come here!” shouted Nick.
“What?” inquired Chris.
“Look outside!” said Nick, “What’s wrong with the weather?” Chris peeked out the door and noticed something whirling far across the horizon.
“What’s that thing over there?” asked Chris.
“Where?” inquired Nick trying to look in Chris’s direction where he was looking.
“That thing far over there,” exclaimed Chris. Nick ran up to the roof of the ship and looked through the binoculars and gasped!
“Oh no! ” gasped Nick, “Not good.”
“What’s wrong?” asked Chris running upstairs. Chris grabbed the binoculars and looked through. “What in the world is that?” shrieked Chris.
“Looks to be some sort of water tornado,” replied Nick.
“We’re going to die!” cried Chris, “I lived such a good life, I don’t want it to end like this.”
“Don’t worry, we can fight this,” promised Nick.
Nick raced to the pilot cabin and turned off the autopilot, steered the boat the other way, put the autopilot back on, came out of the cabin, and assured Chris.
“See there’s nothing to worry about,” exclaimed Nick.
But Chris had his mouth open, his eyes were wide open, and he was staring straight ahead.
“You just made the biggest mistake of your life!” gasped Chris, finally able to mutter some words out of his mouth.
“What do you mean?” asked Nick starting to panic.
“Why don’t you open your eyes and look there,” insisted Chris.
“I..I..Is that a tidal wave?” asked Nick flabbergasted.
“What does it look like?” replied Chris trying to keep his nerves calm.
“I think that is a tidal wave,” said Nick, finally realizing the severity of the situation.
The tidal wave towered over them while Nick and Chris looked like little ants compared to the ginormous wave. Nick raced back to the pilot cabin as fast as his feet could take him. He turned off the autopilot and tried to steer the boat in the other direction at full throttle. But he was too late, the wave was about to collapse right over their boat. Nick and Chris raced up their room, took the life suits that were hanging on the wall, threw them on, and held their breath. The gigantic wave splashed right onto their ship as Nick and Chris flew out of the ship.
Although Nick was wearing his life jacket, the wave was so hard that it pushed him all the way back down. Chris, on the other hand, had a harder problem. The wave had hit him really hard and somehow his life jacket had been punctured and he was drowning all the way down. Nick tried to swim to him but the water pushed him the other way. Nick gathered all his energy, took a deep breath, and dived into the water trying his hardest to get to Chris as fast as possible. He couldn’t believe that Chris did not know how to swim. How could he go on a sailing adventure without learning the basics - swimming!
Nick swam all the way down, grabbed Chris’s hand, pulled him all the way up, and tried to climb on to the ship that was rocking helplessly side to side. Nick grabbed hold of the side of the ship and tried to pull himself and Chris up on to the ship with all his might. As Nick and Chris and hopped on to the ship, Nick raced all the way to the pilot’s cabin and before he could do anything the water tornado hit them and the ship spun in circles endlessly.
As Nick was trying to get hold of the steering wheel, the tornado suddenly launched the entire ship out of the water and the boat bulleted down, hitting the ground of the sea with a massive splash. Big waves of water flew into the air. Right then, Nick grabbed hold of the wheel and controlled the ship which had been flung up and down by the waves a number of times by now. Nick spun the wheel with full force trying to pull the ship out of the storm. A loud thunder filled the sky and then suddenly things started to calm down. The waves started to flatten out as if a giant lion had been tamed. They could see land now.
“Finally,” said Chris breathlessly.
When they reached land, Nick parked the boat on the dock and came out of the boat. He walked over to Chris, punched him on his shoulder and said, “Next time learn how swim before you set out for a sailing adventure!”
