Once upon a time, there lived a group of scientists who built their lab close to the Marathon Forest. One day, three of the eight scientists, Pat, Pete and Sam, went into the forest. They were looking for some big birds like hawks, eagles and owls. They were walking when all of a sudden they heard something from above. They looked up but saw nothing. Sam took out his camera, just in case. They kept on hearing the chirping sound. "I wonder what type of bird that is," Pat wondered. They looked closer and realized it was a baby eagle waiting for his mother to come back with a meal. Sam quickly took a picture before they moved on.
Pete looked up at the sky but the tree branches were covering the sunlight. After a while some light started to appear out of the tree branches. They heard the chirping sound again and saw a huge hawk! They watched the hawk soar high above their heads. Sam missed the chance to take a picture of the big black hawk. While following the bird, he wandered off into the trees and got lost. He looked all around and didn't see any of his friends - or any human at all!
He called for help but no one answered. He checked his pockets and he found his phone. He called Pat, but there was no phone communication signal. Then he called Pete but that didn't work either. He looked for his compass but then he remembered that Pete had it! He started to cry, but he realized crying would not help him at all. So he stopped crying and tried to think of a way out.
It was becoming dark and cold as evening came. He found two pieces of wood and rubbed them together to start a small fire. He began gathering more wood pieces and leaves to make a little hut for him to sleep in overnight. As it got darker and darker, Sam got colder and colder. The fire was fading and he couldn't find any more wood. Sam finally gave up and decided to get some sleep. His watch struck midnight! His hands started to freeze and he couldn't fall asleep. Sam felt terrible!
The next morning, Sam woke up in the Marathon Forest. He quickly jumped out of his small wood hut and looked for the tall red sign of their Science Smart Lab. But he couldn't see it from that deep in the forest. Just then Sam remembered that his phone had a compass! He immediately took out his phone and turned it on, clicked the app and followed the arrow. It was pointing west. Sam leapt up and ran. After running for almost four kilometres he came to a stream. Sadly, it didn't have a bridge. His compass kept pointing west. "So strange, " sighed Sam.
He turned facing east to find another way out. He noticed an owl resting on a tree branch and quickly took its picture. He was glad he was able to get at least one good picture of a bird on this trip!
Then he started running again, hoping to find his way soon, when all of a sudden he bumped hard into a huge tree trunk! He fell flat down on the ground. He could see the open sky and he began to wonder if he would ever find his way back to the Science Smart Lab. "Hey, what is that?" he asked himself. Before he knew it, there was a Smart Science Lab helicopter flying above him! He jumped up and started calling for help, but Pat and Pete did not spot him. Sadly, he sat down again, feeling hopeless. He looked up one last time and this time Pete was climbing down the rope to rescue him! Sam jumped up and started climbing the rope until he was safely inside the helicopter.
Sam was so thankful to be back with his friends. When Pat landed the helicopter at the lab, they walked out happily. The three friends enjoyed some fresh mango milkshake while Sam told them his long story in the Marathon Forest and showed them the picture of the beautiful owl too!
