“Hurry up Alyssa,” called Becky to her 5 year old sister “or we’ll be late!” Today was Alyssa and Becky’s Girl Guides meeting. Alyssa and Becky were both in Girl Guides but in separate divisions due to age. Becky and Alyssa left home with their older brother to the meeting.
Meanwhile, across town, Becky's Girl Guide friend, Dakota, also called her brother to get going. “Come down or I’ll be late!” said Dakota, so her brother came down and they got in the car and drove off to the meeting.
When all three girls got there, Becky and Dakota ran to their room, and Alyssa raced to hers. Becky and Dakota were eager to hear the “big news” from camp counsellor Mrs. Eva. As Mrs. Eva and her daughter Ruth walked in, everyone shouted, “WHATS THE SURPRISE?!”
“Okay girls!” said Mrs. Eva, “well first of all we have a new member, Victoria Ender, and second of all, we are going camping!”
"Yay!" everyone shouted. Victoria was a bit shy and said she did not want to go camping, but Dakota assured to her it would be fine.
“I will be giving out packing lists - Becky please pass these out,” asked Mrs. Eva. “Yes, Mrs. Eva,” said Becky. When Becky got to Dakota and Victoria, she said, “Hi guys! Here are your lists, I’ll come sit with you in a minute.”
Dakota and Victoria scrolled through their lists.“Wow that’s a lot of stuff,” said Anne, who sat across the room. Mrs. Eva started talking, “We’ll be splitting into groups of five. Dakota, Becky, Victoria, Anne and Ruth, you’re in tent one.” Mrs. Eva kept calling names until everyone was assigned.
“Okay, you girls don’t worry about the tents, I’ll be bringing them, but pack everything on the list as well as a survival kit, okay?” “Okay!” echoed all the girls. Then everyone left to get ready.
The next morning Dakota woke up and looked at her to-do list. 'PACK CAMP BAG' was written there neatly after 'TALK TO GIRLS'. Dakota showered and looked at her Guide Handbook. There were 10 camping badges. Dakota packed all the stuff on the list and then called her friends over.
When Dakota’s friends got there, they had already packed their bags. They talked about what they’d do and who was in charge of marshmallows and confirmed the times. Then they all left.
On Monday, the girls met at Ruth’s house with the tent. When they got to camp, they set up their tents and got a chance to earn any camping badge by choosing an activity. Becky and Anne tried the compass badge, but Ruth, Victoria, and Dakota had no idea which badge to do. “Well, if we do the adventure badge, we get to go to the woods!” said Ruth. Dakota and Victoria agreed. “Okay let’s get our survival kits and get going!” Dakota excitedly exclaimed. All the girls raced to their tent.
“Okay it’s time to go!” Ruth said. “Come on guys!” exclaimed Victoria, “Okay, what do we have to do to earn the badge?”
“We have to do an adventure in the trees, and explore a cave. We have to do both of them to earn the badge,” Ruth responded.
“So let’s get started” said Dakota. “Let’s start with the cave!” said Ruth. “Okay! I saw a cave on the way here, so let’s go!” Victoria said.
When the girls got the cave, they excitedly started exploring it. “Wow, its dark in here,” Ruth said. “Good thing I brought a flashlight in my 'survival' kit,” Dakota said, taking out a flashlight. “You guys should have one too.”
“What if we get lost?” asked Ruth, worrying.
“We won’t if we tie ourselves together,” Victoria said.
“That’s not what I meant. I mean, what if we can't find the exit later?” Ruth said plainly.
“We can tie this rope to the little metal bar over there,” Dakota suggested.
“That’s a great idea!” Ruth said.
“Ooh! Let's go and see those Aboriginal carvings,” Victoria said, “they’re so pretty!”
“Let’s take a picture and then leave, we have more to do,” Dakota said. “I’m with you,” Ruth said.
When the girls got out of the cave, they saw Becky and Anne in the distance. "Hey, look it's Becky and Anne,” said Ruth. “Okay, everyone shout and wave your arms to get their attention,” Victoria said. “BECKY, ANNE, WE’RE HERE!”
“HEY GUYS!! WHAT ARE YOU UP TO?” they shouted back. “WE’RE DOING A BADGE, WE’LL BE DONE IN A MINUTE!” When the girls finally met they told Becky and Anne about everything.
“I smell marshmallows” Victoria said. “We must be close to camp,” Anne said. “Look there it is,” Ruth said. “Why don’t we race?” suggested Dakota. Her friends agreed. “On your mark, get set, go!”
All the girls ran towards camp. Ruth won, but when she got there she was out of breathe and tired. She ran into her tent and changed into something comfy. The other girls got there huffing and puffing, and go changed too. When they went back outside, they found out that all the girls had to gather firewood for the fire. So they departed from their cozy camp and set off onto the woods.
A while later Ruth, Dakota, Victoria, Anne and Becky were lost. “We have our survival kits with us, right? So why don’t we blow our whistles?” Dakota said. They blew and blew and blew but none of the other campers came.
“What should we do”? Anne asked. “Well, how about we look out for smoke or firelight - that should direct us back,” Ruth said, “let’s go!”
The girls could see a warm glow in the distance, and followed it back to the camp. They were soon sitting on a log around the fire. “This turned out to be a great first day, but I’m glad we don’t have to go again till next year!” Victoria said. They all agreed that their trip turned out great: exploring, getting lost, earning a badge, and being with good friends!
