Because of a Penny
I can’t believe it. I got kicked out of my job because of a penny!
I was a maid for Mr. and Mrs. Perry, some posh people who lived on the best street of London. They were quite strict. They decided to test me by putting a penny underneath one of the carpets I was supposed to clean today. I found out later that if I kept it, I would be kicked out. But if I didn't clean properly and left it, I would be still be kicked out! Well, you can hardly blame a poor Victorian person like me to keep one penny!
Nowadays in the Victorian Age, male servants get six pounds a month while female servants get six pounds a year. That is so unfair. We work just as hard, waking up at six in the morning and finally going to bed at ten at night, cleaning almost non-stop in between. On some days I can barely stand!
Although, this is not the worst job. Working in the coal mines or the factories is a lot worse. Many people die working there every day. I am very glad I don’t have to work there!
Hang on..... I just got kicked out today, didn't I? Oh dear.....
