One hot summer day, Ali and Ahmed were outside their house practicing basketball with their new ball, which Ali got from his cousin on Eid.
‘‘Good shot!’’ said Ahmed to his friend Ali. Ali was getting ready for his basketball game on Sunday. Ahmed was not going even if Ali insisted for him to join the team. It didn’t interest Ahmed. Ahmed was better than Ali, but still he didn’t want to go.
Finally it was Sunday. Ali was on his way to the basketball court. Suddenly a red car sped into Ali’s car and crashed into the door on Ali’s side! Ali’s leg was broken! The ambulance came and took Ali to the hospital.
In the meantime, at the basketball court, Ali’s team was waiting for him anxiously. ‘‘It’s getting late,’’ said coach Hameed impatiently. The team players were getting upset because of the situation.
Coach Hameed decided to talk to Ahmed. He knew very well that Ahmed and Ali were best friends. He also knew Ahmed was really good at basketball. So Coach Hameed called Ahmed on the phone. Ahmed was in the crowd and he answered the phone. Coach Hameed explained to Ahmed the whole situation.
As soon as the call ended, Ahmed called Ali. There was no answer. Ahmed was really worried. Then he called Ali’s mom. She told Ahmed sadly that Ali was at the hospital, and that he would not be able to play the game. Ahmed told Coach Hameed about the accident, and agreed to take his friend’s place.
The referee blew the whistle and the game started! Ahmed got the ball. He shot and he scored! The other player, Ahad, scored too. Coach Hameed’s team, The All Stars, won by 11 points to 10.
Ahmed did not stay for the Trophy Ceremony because he wanted to be by the side of his dear friend. By the time he reached the hospital, Ali was just coming out of the emergency room with his parents. Ahmed gasped when he saw Ali with crutches. He had broken his right leg and had a cast.
“Assalam-u-alaikum, Ahmed!” greeted Ali. Ali asked him about the game, so Ahmed told him all about the game and their victory. Ali was really pleased. Both the friends gave each other a hug . They were almost crying.
“You’ve always been there to help me,” Ali told Ahmed. Ali felt that even though there was an accident and he couldn’t play, their friendship had grown even stronger, and he was grateful for that!
